Governor Dikko Umaru Radda of Katsina State has flagged off climate change Smart Agriculture empowerment scheme for small holder farmers where the state government contributed thirty six (36) million Naira as part of its support of the scheme.
Organized jointly between Katsina State Government and New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD), Governor Dikko Radda while speaking at the occasion appreciated the coordinator of the NEPAD, Alhaji Jabiru Abdullahi Tsauri for providing sixty million (60) naira to support the smallholder farmers in the state.
Governor Umaru Radda urged extension workers in the state to make best use of the capacity building training to impact on farmers across the 34 local government areas in the State.
While appreciating NEPAD for the training program and empowering farmers, Governor Dikko Radda further directed the extension workers to make follow ups to ensure smallholder farmers are fully utilizing the items provided.
Governor Radda explained that, the extension workers should also ensure proper guides to farmers on modern farming techniques.
On his part, the National Coordinator of the New Partnership for African Development NEPAD, Alhaji Jabiru Abdullahi Tsauri said the Agency recognized that, smallholder farmers are the backbone of African food production that are significantly contributing to food security,rural livelihood and economic stability.
Yet he said they often faced challenges including limited access to inputs, modern technology, finance and market.
Alhaji Jabiru Tsauri maintained that, the program was designed to bridge the gabs, empowering farmers to transit from consistent to commercial Agriculture, increasing yield and improving their income.
Part of the program he added was to provide access to improved seeds, fertilizer, modern farming techniques and linkages to market among others .
Earlier in an address of welcome, the state coordinator of NEPAD, Hajiya Maryam Sodangi shades more light on the program intended to provide training to extension workers and support to smallholder farmers in the state.
She then lauded the National Coordinator of NEPAD for his up an doing in ensuring support to Agriculture sector in the state.
