Hon. Usman Ibrahim Auyo, a member representing the Kafin Hausa, Auyo and Hadejia Federal Constituency, has charged journalists and media organisations to uphold ethical reporting standards.

Auyo made the call in an interview on Saturday, regarding the widespread misinformation across the country, which he described as alarming and threatening peaceful coexistence.

According to him, recently, “I was misquoted by an online media called Rariya in their efforts to get more followers, clicks for pay, or because they are bankrolled to sabotage my political career.

“On August 11, I interviewed with Freedom Radio in Kano, where I revealed the impact of our representation and how the affairs of the legislature are run in the country, a move to inform Nigerians so they can make informed decisions.

“During the conversations, I explained how we, the legislators, hire consultants to strengthen our legislative activities.

“which are in line with our efforts to sponsor bills and ensure their adoption for the betterment of our constituents and Nigerians at large.

“However, I mentioned that sometimes we pay a consultancy fee amounting to 2 million naira before we could get a comprehensive document to present before the house and follow all processes for its implementation.

“But, unfortunately, Rairiya published a different narrative and quoted me wrong, saying I made the claim that we pay 2 million before bills we sponsored can be accepted.

“With this, the public is endangered; therefore, I urge all journalists to remember they owe society accurate information. Spreading fake information can cause chaos, which is far from the ethics of the noble profession.

“I urge every Nigerian to use social media responsibly and spread meaningful information and the word of peace”. Ayuo added.
