As Gombe State accelerates efforts to meet its 2025 Open Defecation Free (ODF) target, stakeholders have been called upon to embrace effective Faecal Sludge Management (FSM) to boost health, sanitation, and economic opportunities.
During a media sensitisation event, Dr. Nuzhat Rafique, Chief of Field Office, UNICEF Bauchi (represented by WASH Officer Nanbam Michael), stressed the need for early preparation, urging the media to champion FSM advocacy.
She expressed hope that with ongoing community mobilisation through the Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) approach, some communities could achieve ODF status by 2025.
Prof. Wilson Danbature of Gombe State University highlighted FSM’s potential in job creation, environmental protection, and revenue generation.
He advocated for investment in faecal sludge treatment plants (FSTPs) to strengthen sanitation infrastructure.
Dr. Abubakar Lumumba of RUWASSA noted that no community in Gombe has yet been certified ODF, citing the need for behavioural change and stakeholder commitment to end open defecation.
