No fewer than 30 journalists have benefited from Chevron Nigeria Limited Annual capacity-building training, held in partnership with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Lagos State Council.

The event, which took place on Monday at the Lagos Airport Hotel, brought together senior business editors, maritime reporters, oil and gas correspondents, and journalists from other specialized beats.

In his opening remarks, NUJ Chairman, Lagos State Council, Mr Adeleye Ajayi welcomed participants.

“It is a great pleasure and our deep gratitude that the Management of Chevron Nigeria Limited has once again volunteered to sponsor this laudable training programme to widen our horizon of business and economy of the nation for the third year.

“This training is coming up at a very auspicious time that the economy of the nation and business climate are undergoing surgery and rejuvenation by the Federal Government.

“It has, therefore, become imperative to collate all shades of opinion, views on how to bring the Nigerian economy back on a sound footing.

“The Management of Chevron Nigeria Limited no doubt is passionate about the transformation of the nation’s economy and I am sure this is one of the reasons why this training programme is being organised over the years.

“Experts are worried about petroleum products pricing, Foreign Exchange volatility, imports and exports regime, stock market and the need for a realistic budget system.

“Our resource persons will do justice to the topic here today and we will return home more informed.

“I wish all of us a fruitful training and deliberation, Ajayi said .”

On his part, Mr Olusoga Oduselu, General Manager, Policy, Government and Public Affairs, Chevron Nigeria Limited, who was represented by Joy Emegara said that the Oil Giant would continue to invest more in human capital.

“On behalf of Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL), I am delighted to welcome you all to this media capacity building programme, organized for Nigerian journalists, in partnership with Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Lagos Council. Chevron Nigeria Limited embarked on this partnership as we believe in the value derivable from developing human capital.

“The previous editions of this programme were held in 2023 and 2024 across three zones in the country: Lagos, Delta and the Federal Capital Territory. Over 180 journalists participated in the training which was geared towards building the capacity of media practitioners to enhance their skills and abilities to perform their duties.

“The 2025 edition of the training was kick-started in Abuja on July 8 with over 70 people participating. Today we are in Lagos and after here, we will proceed to Delta State to deploy yet another training for the journalists in the area.

“We will continue to partner with the media for the development of society.

“In this light, we also recognize the need for capacity building of the media practitioners to enhance their ability to perform their duties. That is why CNL pioneered the Advanced Writing and Reporting Skills (AWARES) programme in collaboration with the Pan Atlantic University, Lagos.

“Over 120 journalists have benefitted from the programme since its inception in 2014.

“We also contribute to the sustainable development of communities where we operate. Our legacy Global Memorandum of Understanding (GMoU), a community-led participatory partnership model for community engagement and sustainable development was pioneered by CNL in 2005.

“For over 16 years of the implementation of the GMoU, CNL contributed billions of naira to the Regional Development Committees (RDCs) that represented the community clusters in our area of operations to execute hundreds of projects.

“Currently, we have transitioned to the Host Community Development Trusts (HCDTs) under the Petroleum Industry Act (2021) as we continue to focus on ensuring the development of our communities.

“Also, through Chevron’s Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND), we are impacting hundreds of lives in the Niger Delta and supporting economic empowerment in the region,” he explained.

Participants were exposed to a variety of insightful presentations such as : “Unlocking the Full Potential of Nigeria’s Oil and Gas Sector for Sustainable Economic Growth” by Goddy Ikeh, ” ; Harnessing Opportunities in Nigeria’s Blue Economy for Economic Development” by Dele Aderibigbe ; “Leveraging the Money Market and Capital Markets to Accelerate Nigeria’s Economic Transformation” by Wunmi Ashafa and ; “Building a Practical and Impactful Budget for Nigeria’s Economic Future: The Role of the Media” by Mrs. Ugonma Cokey

This was followed with the questions and answers session as journalists expressed their appreciation to Chevron Nigeria for the valuable knowledge gained, noting that it would enhance their reporting skills and deepen their understanding of critical economic sectors.

The training concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by NUJ Lagos Council Vice Chairman, Mr. Philip Nwosu.

He commended Chevron Nigeria Limited for its continued investment in the professional development of journalists.

Nwosu also applauded the resource persons and participants, after which certificates were presented to attendees.
