The Ebonyi State House of Assembly Committee on Education has paid a familiarization visit to the Ebonyi State University with a special reflection on the activities of Governor Francis Ogbonnia Nwifuru for prioritizing education in the state, applauding the Vice Chancellor for outstanding performance and also pledged to give him maximum support.
The chairman of the committee and member representing Ebonyi North West State Constituency, Barr Aloysius Nwodo while speaking with the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Michael Awoke, said that the visit was to ensure adequate protection of the standard of education in the university and not to witch-hunt anybody, adding that the committee will synergize with the school management to ensure total development of the Institution.
He then asked the vice chancellor to provide the committee with the staff strength and students enrollments in the school.
Nwodo commended the Vice Chancellor of Ebonyi State University for massive accreditation of programmes within short time in office.
Contributing, Joseph Ununu who is the Deputy Leader of the House, confirmed that the committee was prepared to see to the upward development of the institution hence the visit to know where assistance is needed.
In his own words, Arinze Luca’s Chukwu, the Deputy Chief whip of the House said that the committee is interested in seeing proper administration of the school while Chief Abiri Godwin Abiri wanted the management of the Institution to furnish the committee with details of financial income and expenditure of the school.
Also, Steve Orji Igwe further explained that he wanted to know the total number of faculties accredited in the school while Onyebuchi Ogbadu commended the Vice Chancellor for making the institution conducive for learning.
Victor Nwoke agreed that the availability of the population in the school will help the House to know the main needs of the school while Obinna Mbam said that the committee will do what is needful in improving the educational standard in the school.
Responding, the Vice Chancellor of Ebonyi State University,Prof Michael Awoke firstly appreciated the State Governor for his appointment and the House of Assembly for giving approval to the appointment and maintained that within three months in office, he made sure that the 2296 staff and 22000 students were adequately taken care of.
He disclosed that 21 programmes were fully accredited while 7others got interim accreditation and that the major change facing the Institution was insecurity and incentives as workers were not paid gratuity and pension when retired.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Academics, Prof Ike Elechi Ogba thanked the committee for the visit and assured them that the visit will ginger them to perform more in their duties.
