The Executive Secretary, Yobe State Primary Healthcare Management Board, Dr. Babagana Kundi-Machina has said, the challenge of exclusive Breast Feeding is still a major concern attributed to a number of factors.

Dr. Machina disclosed this while briefing journalists shortly after the flag-off of the 2025 World Breastfeeding Week at the Damaturu Specialist Hospital.

“Despite the well-established benefits of Breastfeeding, we face a troubling reality. According to the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS), the exclusive breastfeeding rate in Yobe state remains at a concerning 31.4%. This low rate is attributed to a combination of factors including limited support in healthcare settings, persistent social stigma, and widespread misinformation about breastfeeding practices” he said.

“We must prioritize creating an environment at home, in healthcare institutions, in the workplace, and in public spaces that empower mothers to make informed decisions and successfully breastfeed their children. Every mother deserves access to accurate information, compassionate care from trained health professionals, and the assurance that she can breastfeed in a supportive and respectful setting” he said.

Some of the partners which include, UNICEF, WFP, BMG, SCI, ACT, Lafiya UK, GHIV Africa, MDF, Care International, NEYIF and ALIMA who also supported the commemoration pledged their continued support to the Yobe state government in ensuring that all breastfeeding mothers in the state comply with the exclusive breastfeeding for their children.

The commemoration with the theme “Prioritize Breastfeeding Create Sustainable Support System” is aimed at recommitting ourselves towards building a breastfeeding friendly society”.

He further explained, Yobe state government is strongly encouraging mothers to practice exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months and to continue breastfeeding alongside appropriate complementary feeding thereafter.
