EU and Giz in collaboration with the Gmz and SEPIN have organized a 3-day training workshop for journalists and media practitioners in Maiduguri, Borno State on strategies, guidelines and processes of strengthening the capacity of working journalists for positive gender reporting by media personnel on gender responsiveness and inclusive governance in Borno State.

The workshop is being held from Tuesday, October 21 to Friday, 24, 2025 at R & B Hotel and Suites, Maiduguri Conference Hall, with the objectives of Identifying internal strengths and weaknesses of female politica actors,, examining the external opportunities, weaknesses, challenges and threats female politicians and public office holders face in the wake of stiff competition during elections at all levels of government.

The German Cooperation and
Co-founder which is the European Union (EU) in its efforts of supporting sustainable social protection, participation and economic resilience in North East Nigeria (SEPIN) programme being implemented by co-created and powered by the development research and projects center (CPRPC) organized the four day participatory and interactive training .

Highting the purpose of the 4-day trading workshop for media stakeholders and heads of media organizations in Borno State as well as heads of government women’s institutions including the CSOs and CBOs among others , the Director of Communications and Partnership of SEPIN Abuja , Malam Hassan Karofi said ,the training is further intended t explore gender-positive representation strategie and develop a action plan or actionable communication plans for a sustainable social protection, participation and economic resilience in Borno State and North East region at large.

He also presented PowerPoint lectures on strategic and impactful process and stakeholders from various groups in the communities including the traditional abd community leaders, the institutional or organizational as well as political leaders , business community and social groups as well as interest group influence, contribute and participate in promoting and enhancing women participation in politics and co testing emotions at all levels of government to bridge the gap and fill the women positions in politics in the country.

Malam Karofi further explained that processes, policies and roles including formulation laws to empower and encourage women participate and play active role and positions during elections remained paramount with the support, influence and collaboration of the media as media play a great role in the society in terms of communication being watchdog of the society that can hold government accountable and responsible even compelled government to be transparent .

According to him, women at different levels of governance , politics and authorities have proved their competence and capabilities but in the political arena, wom n still occur low positions and offices despite their qualifications and experience being related to the background by the men couple with cultural, traditional security, financial, religious set backs that can be amended or adopted despite the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and barriers associated with the active and effective female political and elective participation.

He noted that, whatever could be the position of the situation, there are at least number of ways to address, encourage and promote female gender participation in politics and contesting elections by the men or their husbands with the support and frequent publicity, creation of public awareness and mobilization as well advocacy programmes on broadcast , print and social media among others with women being at 51% against men at 41% according UN records in Nigeria.
The Director added that even without the issue of women 35% affirmation, at the national and state assemblies, women cam be supported and encouraged in many ways to participate fully in political activity at any level of Governance through the media.

Mr. Raphael E, the Communication Adviser of SEPIN elaborated in the acronym giz, gtz, SEPIN and German Cooperation.among others as well as mission and vision of the project statement including scope of the programme .

Hajiya Aisha Bello also anchored on the women, politics , categories or groups of women in power, politics and society who have influence and power to attract services to womenfolk at any level of government in the north.east and Nigeria at large.

The training is expected to finish on Friday with some adopted recommendations on strategies, opportunities, successes, challenges and weaknesses of female politicians and abilities to contest elective positions at all the three levels of government in the country by being more active and effective with the support of the community towards sustainability of development and progress of the society and people economy.
