As Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) announces evacuation of structures including houses and shops along and by the water ways of Alau Dam and Gadabul Water Channels and it’s tributaries warning residents to desist from loitering, swimming and getting water around the places, on Wednesday July 30, 2025, Borno State capital, Maiduguri City witnessed its first heavy rainfall of the year, which displaced many homes and destroyed some houses, household property and vehicles.

This is coming few months after the devastating flood disaster from Alau Dam and over flow of dam and river from the far north and western part of the country that destroyed property both public and private, worth billions of Naira and left many people dead, including victims of collapsed buildings and flood apart from diseases ranging from cholera, Malaria fever, skin diseases to typhoid fever among others from water pollution and diseases on the inhabitants of Maiduguri city.

A situation that has thrown many residents of Maiduguri into panic, fear and confusion with some residents calling on the state and local government areas as a matter of importance and priority, to come to their aid with emergency relief materials and facilities to evacuate them to save their lives and those of their children.

Because the over three hours heavy rainfall Wednesday morning, surprisingly flooded many areas of the city to the extent that houses were collapsed, household belongs and other property of many residents were destroyed and even vehicles were flooded and damaged.

It is pertinent to note also that, buildings affected earlier by the recent flood disaster that consumed 80% of the Maiduguri metropolis that were either repaired or not yet repaired or partly repaired or poorly repaired were further destroyed or collapsed with some falling on family members, including children, leading to another serious disaster with casualties yet to ascertain by the government officials responsible such as SEMA, NEMA, Fire Service, CSOs, NMA, BOSEPA, BORMA, BOGIS, etc.

Personnel who are directly in charge of environmental sanitation, road network and drainage system construction and maintenance, land, houses, shops and industrial layout and allocations, are expected to take relief and succour to the affected people alongside the CSOs, medical doctors and health workers as well as humanitarian organizations and partners.

Some have even expressed concerns and hope that despite the huge amount of funds Borno State Government has expended on the rebuilding and renovation of road network and drainage system, buildings and other structures, all with a view to rebuilding and giving the state capital Maiduguri a new face lift, the flood still ravaged.

“Now another disaster has returned to the city to destroy the good works and aesthetic nature of the renewed projects and beauty of the state capital as a new calamity in the 10 years strategic transformation plan of the state government as part of the post insurgency 25 years Master plan of the state government,” a resident lamented.

While others despite the condition, and teething bondage the state government is passing through, called for urgent intervention across the state capital and its outskirts, urging the state government to immediately come to their aid and save their lives and property as a matter of importance.

Some of them spoke in Hausa and Kanuri languages to our correspondent and sent videos and audios as almost all the routes were inaccessible and not motorable as every where was flooded and unreachable as at the time of filming the report.
