As part of activities marking this year’s World Environment Day, the President of the United Church of Christ in Nigeria (HEKAN), Rev.  Amos G. Kiri, has called on Nigerian students to take the lead in championing environmental stewardship in the face of the worsening effects of climate change.
Rev. Kiri made the call while delivering a keynote address at a seminar organized for students of Tubase International Schools in collaboration with an international organization in Kaduna State, North West Nigeria,  themed:
“Environmental Stewardship in the Light of Climate Change: Promoting Cleanliness in Public Spaces, Workplaces, and Homes.”
Rev. Kiri emphasized the importance of environmental sustainability and the need to raise awareness, especially among the younger generation.
“The welfare of the Earth is directly tied to our own well-being. Students should play active roles in protecting their surroundings”.
He highlighted the dangers of indiscriminate waste disposal, linking it to increased flooding and other environmental hazards.
Rev. Kiri called for a shift in mindset, urging students to embrace tree planting and discourage deforestation, describing them as vital actions in mitigating climate change.
The HEKAN President also urged both students and parents to adopt the habit of tree planting to ensure clean and safe environments, noting that environmental stewardship must begin at the grassroots levelled by young people who will carry the responsibility into the future.
Earlier in his remarks, Mr. Tubase Yakubu, who spoke on behalf of the school management, commended Rev. Kiri and his team for their impactful engagement highlighting the relevance of the seminar and expressed a commitment to sustaining partnerships that benefit both the students and the wider community.
However, HEKAN President  led the students and his team in a clean-up exercise that involved removing debris, collecting plastic waste, and planting trees within the school premises demonstrating a hands-on commitment to the environmental values taught.
