Renowned historian, Professor Toyin Falola on Tuesday, hailed Oba Rashidi Ladoja’s ascension to the throne as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.

Delivering coronation lecture titled Ibadan in History: Issues in Tradition and Modernity held at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, Prof Falola said the coronation of Oba Ladoja symbolized the resilience of tradition and the urgent need for visionary leadership in Ibadan .

Describing the coronation of Oba Ladoja as a historic moment, he stated Ibadan’s future depends on leadership that safeguards its cultural legacy while embracing modernization.

Emphasizing Ibadan’s unique place in African history, Prof Falola noted that “despite modern pressures, Ibadan’s traditions continue to thrive.

“Ibadan has always been a cultural epicenter. In the nineteenth century, it was the largest city in sub-Saharan Africa and a hub for politics, trade, and military power. It was also the center of palm oil production exported to Europe,” he said.

The renowned historian added, “The past is still with us in the Amala we eat, the languages we speak, the clothes we wear, and our performances. These remind us that Ibadan is not only a city of history but also a city of the future”.

” The Olubadan, out of necessity, must balance tradition with the evolving demands of democracy, globalization, and urban expansion.
Having a former governor and senator as Olubadan is significant. His exposure as a politician, statesman, and administrator will guide Ibadan toward modernization”.

Prof Falola said “The city must tackle issues like garbage collection, street cleaning, tree planting, and environmental upliftment. These are part of the responsibilities of modern leadership”

He stated that Ibadan must be recognized not only as a historic city but also as an active participant in global intellectual and cultural discourses,

“The coronation is not a casual ceremony. It is part of how Ibadan negotiates authority, legitimacy, and the preservation of its culture in an ever-evolving world. This book connects the throne and the classroom, the palace and the archive,”

Praising Ibadan’s intellectual heritage, from the University of Ibadan to the city’s writers, artists, and scholars, he said “This book ensures that Ibadan is remembered not just as a city of the past but as one of the future. It honors both a city and its monarch and situates Oba Rashidi Ladoja as a modern leader who must balance tradition with democracy, globalization, and urban expansion,”
