The Coalition of Socialists, Labour Activists, and Students in Oyo State at the weekend, threatened  to embark on a joint protest against hunger, poverty, and bad governance in Nigeria, the worsening living conditions in Oyo State on June 12.

This was contained in a statement  by the Joint Action Front, Take It Back Movement, All Workers Convergence, Concern Students Against Tuition Fee, and the Socialist Labour made available to journalists in Ibadan. 

According to the Coalition, the decision to embark on the said protest was taken at a meeting held on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at the ASUU-UI Secretariat, Ibadan.

The coalition lamented that the ” economic crisis in Nigeria at this period has reached a breaking point”, saying, ” Hunger is now widespread. Unemployment is skyrocketing. Corruption and mismanagement thrive while basic living standards collapse. 

” The Coalition of Socialists, Labour Activists, and Students in Oyo State has resolved to embark on a joint protest against hunger, poverty, and bad governance in Nigeria, including the worsening living conditions in Oyo State”, it said 

It added, ” At a meeting held on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at the ASUU-UI Secretariat, Ibadan, we unanimously agreed to mobilize workers, youths, and students across the state for a mass protest on June 12, 2025, to demand urgent action and lasting solutions from the government to the crisis of high cost of living, insecurity, poverty and hunger including unemployment ravaging the country at the present time”.

” The economic crisis in Nigeria at this period has reached a breaking point. Hunger is now widespread. Unemployment is skyrocketing. Corruption and mismanagement thrive while basic living standards collapse.The people are suffering while the political and business elites continue to enrich themselves at the expense of the masses”

In the statement, the coalition listed its demands to include ” Immediate reversal of petrol price hikes, and full nationalization of the oil and gas sector under democratic control and management by elected representatives of the working people.Reversal of tuition and fee hikes across all public tertiary institutions in Nigeria and 

Creation of mass, decent employment opportunities with full rights to pensions and union representation”.

It listed others as ” End to police brutality, alongside genuine reforms and improved welfare for security personnel.Reversal of electricity tariff hikes and an end to the corrupt and exploitative estimated billing system.Urgent and effective action to end insecurity in every part of the country”.

Others according to the coalition are ” End to hunger and mass starvation .An end to bad governance. We demand transparency, accountability, and people-centered leadership.An uncompromising fight against corruption at all levels of government and society”.

The Coalition stressed, ” It is important to note that this protest is not just a march”, saying, ” It is a declaration by the oppressed that we will no longer tolerate a system that keeps us in poverty, silence, and fear”. 

” We are fighting for a just, equitable, and prosperous society where the needs of the people come first—not the profits of a few”.
