The Oyo State Government on Tuesday, called on residents of Igbeti in Olorunsogo Local Government Area of the state not to panic over the minor tremors and rock movements experienced at Iyamopo Hill in the town over the weekend.
In a statement by the state Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the government noted that it has started immediate evaluation of the situation and that residents in the town should remain calm.
Prince Oyelade maintained that as a precautionary measure, all the people residing near the rock should evacuate temporarily until a permanent solution is reached.
” The disruption is a result of physical weathering on the rock caused by intense heat from February to May early this year, followed by sudden cooling”, he said. This expansion and contraction leads to cracking, peeling, and sheeting, resulting in minor tremors and rock movements as witnessed over the weekend”, he said.
Prince Oyelade added, “Government is also working with experts from the university of Ibadan to analyze the geological activity and provide solutions to mitigate future occurrences and also develop strategies to safeguarding lives and property in the affected area.
” Experts from the Oyo state Solid Mineral Development Agency (OYSMIDA) under its Director General Mr. Biodun Oni have been dispatched to the site”.
The Commissioner said that, “residents of Igbeti can be assured that there is no cause for alarm”, and that ” no casualties have been recorded in the incident.
Prince Oyelade emphasized that the state government remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens, saying, ” We will continue to prioritize public safety and give updates as investigations progress.”
