The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on Tuesday, launched a three-day training of 100 women on digital literacy skills in Zamfara state as part of its effort to ensure gender inclusion in the digital economy.

Zamfara State recently became the first state in Nigeria to launch the digital literacy framework in June 2025.

Declaring the training open in Gusau, Governor Dauda Lawal, represented by his deputy, Malam Mummuni, commended the NCC for selecting Zamfara State to conduct the training.

The governor promised to support the NCC initiatives to promote digital literacy and skills in Zamfara.

“We will continue to be ready to join hands with the NCC to ensure sustainability of various digital literacy and skills programs in the state,” the deputy governor said.

Also speaking, Hajiya Hauwa Wakili, Head of Digital Skills and Services, NCC, said the training is aimed at empowering women on digital literacy and skills.

Wakili noted that the training is part of the initiatives of the Commission to support women to become self-reliant in the current digital space.

She further stated that the training is in line with President Tinubu’s initiative to enhance the digital economy in the country.

“This is to equip the trainees to be self-reliant in digital skills, and NCC is always ready to support and empower women on digital literacy skills.” She said.

She, however, urged the participants to break the barriers in digital literacy skills, stressing that NCC is determined to bridge the gender digital inclusion gap in Nigeria.

“This is the fourth industrial revolution. As women, you must join the train, or you will be left behind. After the training, you will be empowered and equipped with the required digital skill.” She added.

In a keynote address delivered at the event, the Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida said the ultimate goal of the commission is to empower and train women in the use of digital tools to enhance their businesses and daily activities.

Maida, who was represented by the Kano Zonal Controller of the Commission, Malam Abubakar Kurfi, described the training as a welcome development, especially targeting the gender gaps in digital literacy

He stated that the training is dedicated to women. “I therefore, urge the participants to utilize this opportunity for better future, our gathering today is not just a ceremony but a collective goal to empower women and break the gender exclusion to digital literacy and skills,” he noted.

In a welcome address, the Executive Secretary, Information Technology and Development Agency (ZITDA), Habibu Gajam, reiterated the commitment of the state government to achieve key areas of digital economy services.

“We are grateful to NCC for the effective collaboration. Apart from this training, more programs are coming on 4G and 5G networks. We would ensure we recruit the smartest ones among the trainees for advanced training. ” Gajam said.
