The National Civil Society Network on Water and Sanitation (NEWSAN) has sensitised communities in Kaura Namoda and Gusau local government areas of Zamfara State affected by cholera outbreak.

Speaking during his visit to the affected communities, the Zamfara NEWSAN Coordinator, Amb. Musa Umar Aboki called on community members be more proactive in cholera prevention.

The NEWSAN is an umbrella and coordinating network of over 300 Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Community Based Organisations (CBOs) working to promote Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) across six geopolitical zones of Nigeria.

Aboki noted that one of the activities of NEWSAN is sensitisation and promoting collaboration among stakeholders towards cholera eradication.

According to him, Cholera outbreak cases increase during rainy seasons, coinciding with periods of flooding and increased transmission due to lack of access to clean water, sanitation facilities, and proper hygiene practices, especially in overcrowded areas.

“We will continue to involve community leaders and engaging with local populations to promote hygiene practices as well as encourage everyone to report any suspected case of cholera to nearest health care facility”, he added.

The coordinator commended Zamfara State Government, partners and other stakeholders for their support and collaboration aimed at strengthening surveillance systems and ensuring prompt response to outbreaks in order to reduce the spread
