Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi has commended security agencies for recent breakthroughs in the fight against terrorism, banditry and kidnappings, while warning that victories would be hollow without justice for those arrested.
Obi, in a post on X, described the military’s achievements as a remarkable feat and a step towards restoring peace in a country plagued by violent crime and insurgency.
“Our gallant officers and men in uniform have shown courage, often under challenging conditions,” he said, praising their sacrifices and professionalism. He urged that security personnel be better equipped, trained and motivated to consolidate gains.
But Obi cautioned that beyond the arrests, authorities must ensure accountability to prevent a cycle of impunity.
“Terrorism and violent criminality thrive when justice is not served, when those arrested are recycled back into society without accountability,” he wrote.
Obi’s praise is coming on the heels of recent victories the Nigerian security forces have recorded in their fight against insurgency which has also earned praises from the UK and the United States.
He stressed that sustainable security is crucial for development.
“Let this victory remind us that security is the foundation of every meaningful development. A secure Nigeria is possible, and together we must support our security agencies with the right leadership, resources, and political will to end the reign of terror in our land.”
Obi who is now part of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections concluded with his familiar call for change.
“A secure Nigeria is possible, and together we must support our security agencies with the right leadership, resources and political will to end the reign of terror in our land. A new Nigeria is possible,” he concluded.
