The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Northern Support Group has thrown its full weight behind the 2027 presidential ambition of former President Goodluck Jonathan, declaring that there is “no going back” on the collective resolve to return him to power.

This was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the group’s 8th meeting held in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, between Wednesday and Thursday, October 8–9, 2025.

According to the statement signed by Hon. Yusuf Abubakar, Northern Coordinator, and Hon. Adamu Ahmed Narayi, North-West Zonal Secretary, the meeting brought together representatives of PDP support groups from across the 19 northern states to deliberate on the party’s direction and strategies ahead of 2027.

The group reaffirmed its unwavering support for the National Chairman of the PDP, H.E. Ambassador Iliya Umar Damagum, for his ongoing efforts to reposition the party through reconciliation and forgiveness, aimed at restoring unity and cohesion among members.

“We remain optimistic that the PDP is not beyond redemption. With genuine commitment and collective sacrifice, our great party will reclaim power at the national level and in states currently under the APC,” the communiqué stated.

The group described Jonathan as “a symbol of peace, unity, and progress”, commending his past leadership qualities and consistent loyalty to the PDP. It urged all party stakeholders to rally behind his aspiration, emphasizing that his eligibility to contest has long been settled and can no longer be used as a tool for opposition.

“Dr. Jonathan peacefully handed over power to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari in an election he contested. His record of maturity and patriotism makes him the right choice for 2027,” the statement read.

The group further called for an aggressive and coordinated media campaign particularly across the northern region to enlighten Nigerians about the benefits and prospects of a Jonathan comeback.

However, the communiqué expressed concerns over what it described as the “negative conduct” of certain party leaders and elders within the PDP, accusing some members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of working against the party’s unity and progress.

It specifically called out the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, alleging that his actions have been divisive and detrimental to the party.

“Wike’s continued recruitment of party members to sow discord is unacceptable and must be addressed decisively,” it said.

The group urged the National Chairman, Ambassador Damagum, to institute disciplinary measures against members whose activities undermine the PDP’s survival and reconciliation efforts, especially those engaging in anti-party behavior or collaborating with the ruling APC.

The communiqué concluded by reaffirming the Northern Support Group’s loyalty to the PDP’s collective leadership, pledging continued efforts to strengthen grassroots structures, restore the party’s lost glory, and ensure internal unity and discipline.

“The PDP-SG will continue to uphold the supremacy of the party above any individual. Our loyalty is to a committed leadership determined to build a cohesive and progressive platform,” the statement added.
