Yobe State Government has said that the quest to strengthen routine immunization across the 17 local government areas of the state is not negotiable, stressing immunization campaigns must reach all children especially underserved, remote and conflict affected areas.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Mohammed Lawan Gana disclosed this while addressing journalists as part of the commemoration of World Polio Day in Damaturu the state capital.

” Vaccines work, polio vaccines are safe, effective and is our strongest defense against paralysis and health. Now is not the time to step back; the final steps towards reduction are the most critical and most challenging, any complacency now could reverse decades of progress” he said.

He further said, the state taskforce on immunization and primary healthcare headed by the Deputy Governor, Idi Barde Gubana has significantly given the much-needed stewardship in sustaining a polio free in Yobe state in the past months.

“Success recorded so far in the Polio eradication initiative in Yobe state has largely been due to sustained effort and political commitment of Governor Mai Mala Buni buni providing all the necessary resources for polio eradication at all levels.

The team had earlier taken to the streets of Damaturu the state capital to create awareness on the significance of accepting polio immunization in the state.

Partners including the World Health Organisation, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) among other partners also participated in the commemoration and the awareness creation.
